Why we should eat organic food

Strong and well-conducted studies published in leading peer-reviewed journals have shown that families who consume an organic diet have 90 percent lower levels of pesticides in their bodies than families who consistently consume ‘conventional’ pesticide-treated foods.

Why Organic

Food grown in a nonorganic fashion is laden with pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and is potentially genetically modified. Simply put, pesticides and the like, are chemicals which can wreak havoc on the body. They do this by altering you genes, hormones, and cells.

Exposure to these chemicals have been shown in numerous studies to cause extensive neurological, hormonal, and whole body effects. Many of these side effects are reported when someone is exposed to a large doses of the chemicals, like a farm worker. And as you can conclude when we eat something like a handful of conventional strawberries we are not exposed to anywhere near the amounts used in the studies. At very small doses your body may be able to process, filter, and excrete the chemicals and go about its merry way. However, we must become aware of the number of times each day we consume anything non-organic. Potentially hundreds of times and this is where the exposure adds up and eventually the body is overloaded with so many chemicals it simply cannot keep up....this is were disease sets in

Conventional Food Example

Just as an example lets use a bowl of conventional honey-nut O's cereal.  Here's the ingredients:

Whole Grain Oats, Sugar, Oat Bran, Modified Corn Starch, Honey, Brown Sugar Syrup, Salt, Ground Almonds, Calcium Carbonate, Trisodium Phosphate, Wheat Flour, Vitamin E, Zinc, Iron, Vitamin C, Niacinamide, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B1, Vitamin A Palmitate, Folic Acid, Vitamin B12, Vitamin D.

Ok so first lets all take a deep breath, all we can change is the future.

Now to most this may seem like a good option. However, let me explain why they are not...23 ingredients, all which are sprayed with one if not multiple pesticides. Plus you have the vitamins sprayed on the O's, which are really just other chemical compounds created in a lab sourced from various other potentially toxic chemicals. Your body truly doesn't use most of these 'lab" vitamins like it does its real nature found counterpart. (More on this topic to come in later posts.)

Now one brand of O's cereal recently stated they are removing GMO's from their O's, which is great and a step in the right direction! However, there is still the issue of pesticides and if you eat any other brand of O's you are getting GM ingredients in the corn starch, brown sugar, vitamin e, and vitamin c. GM ingredients are lurking everywhere in nonorganic food (more on GM food and what it is to come in later posts...even more a reason to subscribe)

So this is just one example, which has a relatively short ingredient list. Look at any other processed/packaged food ingredients and the list is much longer. Meaning more toxin exposure.

Now you can see the number of chemicals we are exposed to daily in food alone is insane! Plus you have toxins from other things like air pollution, water, medications, etc etc....I know you hate me.  I repeat...all you can change is the future, don't stress about the past. Stress is bad too! If you give your body the proper food (think fuel) it will heal its self...we are designed at a celular level to do this.

Here are only a handful of the documented studies on the effects of pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides have on the human body.

  • High cancer prevalence in farm workers- well documented in multiple case-control and cross-sectional studies. (source, source, source)
  • Neurotoxic effects well documented in fetal and infant populations resulting in low IQ scores, ADHD, autism, bipolar disorder, etc. (sourcesource, source)
  • Positive association between lymphoma and pesticide exposure. (source
  • Environmental estrogens are organochlorine pesticides which have been found to induce cancer breast tissue. (source)
  • Childhood leukemia linked to prenatal pesticide exposure in many studies. Also childhood brain cancer. (source, source)
  • Links of chlorinated hydrocarbons and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons to pancreatic cancer. (source)
  • Parkinson's Disease rates increased in individuals with pesticide exposure. (source)

But wait there's more...

Another issue with pesticide use is ecological. Many pesticides are heavy metal based and they stay around for a very-long-time. They damage the soil, leak into the water supply, and leave long lasting effects on our world for generations.

So there you have it, pesticides do cause disease. Avoid them if you can...yes organic is more expensive...but a doctors bill is even more so.

Question time

What do you already buy organic in your home?

Were you aware of all these nasty effects?

Has your opinion changed about conventional food?
