Why I Take Fermented Cod Liver Oil

Vitamins and supplements are surrounded by quite a bit of controversy, some people say there's no point while others encourage taking a heaping pile of them each day. My view tends to fall somewhere in the middle. If we eat a nutrient dense diet of nutritious foods most of our vitamins and nutrients will be obtained from the food. After all, this is the best way to get nutrients into your body as they are the most bioavailable and contain all the enzymes and precursors necessary to absorb the nutrients. Nature is most definitely better. However, I do feel that supplementation is needed in the following circumstances

  1. When trying to heal the body from an illness or chronic disease, to provide it with the building blocks necessary to heal.
  2. When pregnant or breastfeeding because those cute little babies suck the life out of you.
  3. If you choose not to follow a nutrient dense diet, i.e., typical American food.
  4. If following a vegetarian or vegan diet because deficiencies are common in these populations.  

If and when any of these above four things are encountered in your life specific supplements tailored to your needs will do wonders here. For example B12 if you are a vegetarian. However, even when in good health and eating healthy foos some nutrients are still difficult to maintain adequate levels of. These nutrients are vitamins A, E, D, K, omega 3's, and antioxidants. Now, you could supplement each of these individually. But who wants to have a sea of bottles to keep track of? Plus, and even more importantly, most often these will be synthetic vitamins which your body doesn't use nearly as well. That's because they are missing the enzymes and precursors the body needs to fully unlock the nutrient's potential. With that being said if you could take one supplement that covers all but one of the above listed nutrients would you? Fermented Cod Liver Oil (FCLO)

FCLO is as it sounds, the liver of a cod that is fermented over 6 months using traditional methods. The company I use follows a low heat process so all of the delicate vitamins remain intact and are amplified by the fermentation process. FCLO has been taken for centuries by a plethora of cultures as a superfood. It is the crème de la crème of super-foods. Let me tell you why.

It contains omega-3's, vitamins A, D, E, quinones like CoQ10, and other essential and nonessential fatty acids. First off, most Americans are deficient in vitamin D which can cause a long list of illnesses. I am not going to list them, check out this article from the Healthy Home Economist for more info. Most know that omega-3's (why people take fish oil) are heart and brain healthy. The other nutrients listed above are needed throughout the body to maintain optimum health. FCLO is anti-inflammatory and encourages healthy cholesterol levels. It is also prized for supporting bone and teeth

It is important to take high quality FCLO for many reasons.

  1. The concern of heavy mental contaminants.
  2. Synthetic vitamins A and D are often added back into fish oils after refinement so that they can boast high A and D content. However, because these are synthetic forms the body doesn't use them as well.
  3. The ratio of vitamin A to D must be correct, like when found in nature. Otherwise one risks overdosing on vitamin A, which you want to avoid like the plague.

In my opinion there is only one company that makes a high quality FCLO. That's Green Pastures Fermented Cod Liver Oil. I recommend to take it along with their High Vitamin Butter Oil, or better yet buy the blend like I do.

Butter Oil

High vitamin butter oil is from the raw milk of 100% grass fed cows. It contains essential fatty acids, conjugated linoleic acid, and vitamin K2. Instead of trying to describe why I recommend the blend of butter oil and FCLO, I am going to quote a much more eloquent writer. High-vitamin butter oil contains arachidonic acid (AA), an omega-6 fatty acid, while cod liver oil is rich in eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), an omega-3. Moreover, the saturated fatty acids in the butter oil promote efficient utilization of the unsaturated fatty acids in the cod liver oil. The Taste

Ok I am going to be blunt here. Now, I can only speak for the Cinnamon Tingle (this is the flavor you should try...hint hint) flavored Butter Oil/FCLO blend, as I have never had the straight FCLO. However, my 7 month old takes it, my 3 year old takes it, and my 15 year old niece takes it...and they don't complain...so neither should you. Really, it's not bad. It is like an explosion of cinnamon followed by a less than pleasant fishy aroma.
