Ancient and wise, the holistic system of Ayurveda is the people’s medicine. This practical science has developed benevolently alongside humans for over 4000 years. Ayurveda was discovered by the Rishis, the seers of India, by reflection and observation – some say a gift from the Gods. We can rely on this knowledge today to support us as it still holds true no matter who we are or where we live.

Just like the Rishis, it’s beneficial to us to reflect at the end of our day on what we did, what we ate, what we said that made us feel light, healthy and at ease. Choose to act that way again tomorrow.  We can develop our own lifestyle as we make health supporting choices by bravely listening to what our intuitive voice tells us. Deep down we know what we really want and how to create a day for ourselves that is honest. This is the way of Ayurveda.

As Goethe said “As soon as you trust yourself, you will know how to live”. He went on to say that once you commit, the entire universe conspires to assist you. This is what it feels like to live according to the Nature that we are made of and are part of. When we live this way we enjoy abundant energy and happiness.

It is irrelevant whether you are eating Indian food or not, whether you live in a modern world or not. The principles of healthy living have not changed. The details are yours to design according to your individual constitution (Prakruti), digestive strength (Agni), age, culture, and the season. Ayurveda provides guidelines for daily living called Dincharya, which are based on its principles and these work best when they are tailored to suit you. Respect this ancient tradition, get to know it, and then make it yours.

  1. Have an earlier, lighter dinner around 6pm, sleep before 10pm and wake as close to sunrise as you can.

    • It takes energy to sleep! Your body will love the available fuel from your dinner to repair and naturally detox itself overnight. Notice how tired you actually are around 9pm. You know how great it feels to wake refreshed - the way to enjoy that starts the night before.

  2. Take your green smoothie and make it fit your Ayurvedic body type for improved assimilation of all the bio-available goodness.

    • Health food for you means that which nourishes your system. Avoid cold smoothies and make them less thick and less sweet than you usually drink. Thick, cold and sweet are Kapha qualities and to take this in the morning, a Kapha time of day, can often be too heavy. The resulting strain on digestion can be felt as bloating by morning tea time.

  3. Breathe before eating!

    • Three deep belly breaths as you sit down to eat prepares your whole body to receive more nutrition. The breath is Prana, life force, and it settles Vata dosha (the element of air and movement) in your system. Relaxed breathing regulates your nervous system which helps your GI tract be ready to receive food. Nourishing your parasympathetic nervous system leads to calmer clear thinking.

{Jena here, I can tell you while these interventions may seem small and unimportant they aren't! After incorporating them into my daily life I have noticed huge changes in my energy, skin, and sleep quality}.

Ayurveda offers us the fundamental principles on which to hang our awareness, to give it some meaning for us with a vocabulary. There is more to the word Vata than the translation of ‘air element.’  It is worth learning this deeper meaning so that when you tap into your intuitive voice and notice something in your body-mind system, then you will know what it means and what you individually can do about it.
