Introduction to Essential Oils

Essential Oils for Beginners, learn the basics to essential oils

By: Catherine Truman

Growing up, I was just like every other family. We ate hamburger helper, did chores on Saturdays and visited the doctor when we were sick. I can’t tell you how many different prescription antibiotics I took when I was a child, but I had no idea the effect they were having on my body.  Like most families, we were completely unaware that there was ever an alternative!

When I was first introduced to essential oils in my twenties, I didn’t know what to think. The thought of essential oils made sense; we use the natural substances on earth to help prevent and treat disease. But when it came to actually using them…I didn’t. Ever.

Until I was sick.

My family and I got chronic sinus infections. They would come every change of season and I could always tell when one was coming on. At that particular point of my life, I was newly married and too poor to have health insurance. So I knew I couldn’t go to the doctor, as per usual, and get an antibiotic to wipe out the infection. I had to either A) be miserable for over a week and wait it out…or B) do something different and unfamiliar to help combat this nasty infection.

Learn the basics to essential oil use

My husband’s family had used essential oils for YEARS. They had been tried and tested by his family, and now it was my turn to become a believer! So because I had no other option, I used them…and I used them diligently. I applied them topically by rubbing them on my spine every day, kept a diffuser running constantly with essential oils in it, and even took a few different oils in a capsule a few times a day. And you know what? THEY WORKED.

It wasn’t like a snap of the fingers and my infection was gone…but in a few days, I was feeling almost 90% myself again.  No runny nose, sneezing, sore throat for me anymore…And I knew that my usually prescription of antibiotics could NOT do that so quickly.

So, I became a believer…and since then I have used essential oils every day and educating people about them every week. It has become an absolute JOY watching others share in the gift of essential oils! They are truly a gift from the earth that I enjoy sharing with others!

The Basics

Are you new to essential oils? Come learn the basics to essential oil use. Essential oils for beginners. #holisticliving #essentialoils
  • Essential oils are natural compounds that are found in the seeds, bark, rinds, stems, roots, flowers and other parts of plants. They give plants, flowers and fruits their aromatic smell and are have been used for thousands of years for a variety of uses.

  • Many oils have been found to have anti-septic, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-tumoral properties.
  • Essential oils are 50 to 70 times more powerful than herbs!

  • Oils can be used in three different ways: 1) Aromatically, 2) Topically, 3) Internally.

  • Some essential oils are “hot” and can irritate the skin. Always use caution when applying topically and use a carrier oil to help dilute (fractionated coconut oil, sunflower oil, olive oil) before applying the essential oil.

  • Essential oils can enter the bloodstream within 30 seconds!

  • Always dilute all essential oils when using on children and babies.

  • Essential oils have the ability to pass through the cell membrane, due to their lipophilic properties, and can therefore penetrate each cell in our bodies to fight viruses and help our bodies heal. Prescription drugs and antibiotics cannot do this, which makes essential oils a great alternative.

  • Not all essential oils are created equally! {more on that here} When using essential oils, always find a brand that you can trust to be TOTALLY Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade. These companies guarantee their oils are pure, safe to use and highly effective.

  • Essential oils are highly ALKALINE and highly ANTIOXIDANT. Taking them regularly can promote a very healthy body environment where infection and disease cannot thrive.

  • When inhaled, essential oils travel through our nose to the olfactory nerve. This nerve is connected to the limbic system of our brain where emotions are controlled. This is why essential oils are highly effective in helping deal with mood disorders such as depression, anxiety and ADHD.
