Confession…I’ve always liked going to the dentist, even as a kid. Either my mom or my dentist must have done some heavy brainwashing on my part because I’ve yet to meet a person who agrees with me. Poor dentists always getting a bad rap…but I guess no one likes going to the doctors either.
While visits to the dentist are super important to keep teeth healthy, like anything in the health arena, it’s what we do in our everyday lives that makes all the difference. Also, like most things in the health arena the prevention we are told to take from the average dentist isn’t the whole piece of the puzzle. After all, dental disease is rampant in developed countries yet we religiously brush twice a day and floss. What gives?
Dental disease prevention is not just about brushing, flossing, and avoiding sugar. It’s also about maintaing healthy tooth chemistry. When our bodies are robbed of nutrients via phytic acid found in grains, the way our body process refined sugar, and overall poor diets our teeth are the first to suffer. Really.
In order to protect our teeth, gums, and have oral wellness it’s imperative to look at the mouth from a holistic point of view. Not only should we take meticulous care of the teeth by brushing, flossing, etc. We should also supply them with a proper Real Food diet and the nutrients they need to maintain health. Things like refined carbs, unsoaked/unsprouted grains, and unsprouted nuts should be avoided as they cause our bodies to be robbed of nutrients that teeth need to maintain strength.
A great book on the subject is, Cure Tooth Decay, I recommend anyone with oral issues read it as it will change the way you think about dental disease.
While, a proper diet can heal cavities and prevent decay there are many holistic products on the market that can help our teeth be the best they can be. Because sadly most conventional dental products have nasty ingredients that are counterproductive to oral health. Below are 5 products I use to keep my families teeth healthy...day in and day out.
Oral Probiotics from Hyperbiotics
I have an in depth post on the subject here, but essentially study after study shows that supplying the oral cavity with particular strains of bacteria helps prevent tooth decay, gum disease, and throat and sinus infections. Essentially, just like our guts when our mouth's bacteria are out of balance disease can set in. By chewing probiotics designed for oral health our mouths can have a fighting chance against the bad bacteria that cause disease. The only company I use for this is Hyperbiotics PRO-Dental. My entire fam takes it everyday! It’s available from Amazon for $22 for a 45 day supply.
Tooth Powder from Clean Living Collection
Conventional toothpaste is bad on many levels. Toxic surfactants, preservatives, abrasive and irritating cleansers, the reasons to use natural toothpaste are many. Even brands likes Tom's are deceiving, as they often contain ingredients which are no-no's. Wondering what a tooth powder is? Well, it's definitely on the crunchy spectrum of oral health products, but it's stellar at remineralizing the teeth (think healing cavities) and whitening naturally.
To use you wet the toothbrush and dip it in the powder. Yes, it's totally foreign brushing with what feels like dirt, and yes my kids still refuse to use it, but for adults (and adventurous kids alike) it is a great way to supply your teeth with much needed minerals to keep them strong. I love the Clean Living Collection’s Natural Clay Tooth Powder because it’s naturally whitening and amazing at cleaning teeth. Every time I use it I’m amazed at how smooth and clean my teeth feel, even in the typical hard to reach spots. With remineralizing bentonite clay, whitening turmeric and charcoal, and antiseptic cinnamon and cloves the formula leaves no wants. It’s available in 5 flavors, my fav is the Sage Mint and sells for $10-18 here.
OraWellness HealThy Mouth Blend
Another toothbrushing aid, but different from anything you’ve tried. HealThy Mouth is the most effective of the three brushing aid products mentioned at reversing dental issues. An essential oil blend, this game changing therapeutic product has done wonders for my mom's deep pockets and oral wellness.
This blend is made of organic and wild crafted essential oils to which you place 3 drops on your brush. They will be no foaming or really anything but intense flavor in your mouth as you brush. While it takes some getting used to, it’s well worth it. I have used a few bottles myself and love the stuff, the flavor is very powerful and some don't like it ...think children...but the essential oils in this bad boy do wonders for healing damaged mouths in multiple ways. It’s available to purchase here for $23.
Dr. Brite Toothpaste
For those of us still wanting a regular tube toothpaste I reach for Dr. Brite. Formulated by a sister duo of dentist and surgeon they have created an entire line of natural oral wellness products. Dr. Brite’s Whitening Mineral Toothpaste is a lovely cream paste formula with a light minty taste. Free of SLS, fluoride, artificial colors and sweeteners this paste cleans and polishes gently. If you’re used to foaming conventional paste, don’t expect it here…or with any truly natural toothpaste for that matter…but Dr, Brite’s does have a gentle foam and great brushability…yes I just made that word up. It’s boosted with coconut oil, vitamin C, green tea, and activated charcoal to keep gums healthy, teeth cavity free, and breath fresh. You can find it here for $9.
Synergy Company Bone Renewal
Many of us are lacking proper calcium in our diets, and it’s a mineral that’s vitally important to tooth health…as well as overall health. After all our teeth are made of calcium, so when the body is low on this mineral (or robbed of it by unsprouted grains/nuts) the teeth and bones are the “donators”. To preserve itself the body will always take from the donors…the teeth and bones…and gives to the most vital systems like muscle, nerves, and cells. It will do this to no end, so if calcium intake isn’t adequate the bones will become weak and the teeth will decay from giving up too much of their structure. This means we must always have a proper daily intake of Ca or our teeth and bones will pay.
The caveat is most calcium supplements are pretty shitty, more on that here. Not only are they difficult for the body to use but there’s good evidence that they increase our risk of heart attack by 30% and even stroke (source). Also, evidence that non-food based Ca supplements support bone health and reduce risk of fracture is lacking (source). The type of calcium supplement that doesn’t have these risks and is completely available for the body to use is plant based whole food calcium with vitamin K2 and D3.
When dietary sources of calcium aren’t enough I turn to The Synergy Company Bone Renewal…actually I take it everyday even if I think I have gotten enough calcium. Bone Renewal is truly a complete calcium supplement. Made entirely from plant based calcium (whole food) and coupled with ever important co-factors K2, D3, Mg, Silica, Strontium, and Boron to unlock the calcium for our bodies. I can rest assured knowing what I’m taking is the best and will help keep my teeth healthy.
I have been taking Bone Renewal for about a half a year now and my tooth sensitivity is now down to zero. Also, my nails grow longer than they ever have. It’s available for $36-40 here.
Dr. Brite Antioxidant Infused Teeth Whitening Pen
While this isn’t a product to keep your teeth healthy per se it keeps them looking pretty for sure. If you’ve been wanting a natural solution to remove teeth stains look no further. Dr. Brite's Whitening Pens are available in two flavors and two types, one with and one without hydrogen peroxide. I used this one for an entire tube (about two 1/2 weeks) and was very impressed with the results. My teeth were noticeably whiter and brighter plus I had no sensitivity…which is so common with other whiteners. The application is amazingly simple, just click to dispense gel, rub onto teeth with soft pen tip, let dry, and don’t eat for 30 minutes. Voilá shades whiter, naturally. Here are before and after pics below to prove it. They can be purchased here for $20.
So, there you have it, my picks holistic dental health. Are some of these ways new to you? Which ones?
