Lauren Burkitt's favorite green beauty products

It's Back!!

Time to take a look into another clean beauties medicine cabinet. You may remember from here, here, and here the amazing cabinets we've already been allowed to sneak a peek at. And oh how we've loved these posts in the past, they are a great way to get to know favourtied clean beauty brands and holistic health remedies. What a better way to get the inside scoop than to go inside the most coveted spot in the holistic home...the medicine cabinet.

This peek features an amazing & vibrant young woman hailing from Canada, Lauren Burkitt. She's the voice behind the fab blog The Fig's Heart which centers around green beauty, mind, and body wellness. Her blog is full of great reads and yummy recipes, like the divine Key Lime Cardamom Vanilla Smoothie and some great tips on skin care like how to honey cleanse. It also features my guest post, Two Feminine Benefits of Probiotics, that's a must read for any woman out there.

Without further ado...Lauren Burkitt's Medicine Cabinet!!

About Me

It's been just over a year since I made the switch to all-natural skincare and beauty products. What a journey it's been! Of course this isn't something that happens overnight but with the help of the green beauty community I have been lucky enough to try a LOT of different brands and products over the past year and I'm happy to share a few of my favourites with you today.

I started this journey by thinking about all the time I spend in the bathroom during the week doing simple things like washing my face and brushing my teeth and how I could start using this time to improve my life rather than feeling like it was time wasted. I wanted glowing skin (and still strive for this) but I wanted more than that. I wanted to love my skin!

I started by using natural products and really getting to know what they were made of and why certain ingredients are beneficial for my skin. I chose products more intuitively rather than by category {something that we do at CTNB too!}. I have combination/oily skin but sometimes I use products labelled for 'dry' or 'sensitive' skin. It's all about getting to know yourself. What scents draw you in? What textures and consistencies will make you slow down and enjoy the process more?

I like to think I take a holistic approach when it comes to green beauty.  I look at the practice of skincare as more of a sacred ritual than a daily task

It's how we start and end our day, everyday! It can make a big impact on your life if you enjoy this time with yourself and your skin. {Amen, Lauren! I couldn't agree more!}

---------------

I like to think of the products around my sink as my 'top shelf' products. The ones that make me not want to branch out and try anything new. These are the ones I use everyday, the ones that you won't find shoved into a drawer but displayed with pride on my bathroom counter.

Morning Routine

I cleanse my face with the Ursa Major Fantastic Face Wash. A his & hers dream, perfect for every face and every shower. It's gentle but still leaves my face with that squeaky clean feel that I like to start my day. It has a grounding outdoorsy scent from the essential oils of cedar, spearmint, vetiver, and lavender.

I like to apply toner in larger quantities than necessary and then follow with a facial oil/serum blend (I'm always rotating through toners since I go through them so quickly). My everyday essential serum is the Viva Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum {read Lauren's review here} This sinks into the skin very quickly and helps any product you put on afterwards last longer throughout the day. It's a hydrating, plumping powerhouse!

Next I dab a couple drops of facial oil on my cheeks and brows. I'm using a blend of Pai Rosehip BioRegenerate Oil and Leahlani Skincare Champagne Serum. Leah's Champagne Serum has such a good smell it can instantly put me in a good mood. {find out about Leahlani's other products in this review} I completely adore her and her products. I usually let the oil soak in for a few minutes while I apply Meow Meow Tweet's Lavender Deodorant Cream and whatever body oil/moisturizer is in rotation.

I finish off by applying eye cream and moisturizer. Right now I'm using two Eminence moisturizers, the Arctic Berry Peptide Radiance Cream & the Sweet Red Rose Whip Moisturizer (on my cheeks/neck). At this point I'll give myself another quick little spritz of toner and then go get dressed.

Evening Routine

I take my makeup off with One Love Organics Vitamin B Enzyme Cleansing Oil. I will never replace this product. Ever. I always let this soak in for a few minutes (perfect time for a facial massage) before removing with a gentle face cloth. It breaks down all my makeup and any other oil/dirt that has collected over the day. At the same time it also hydrates the skin and smells like a tropical party.

Then I'll go in with my second cleanser to properly wash my face. I like to use a physical exfoliator at night like the One Love Organics Brand New Day Microderma Scrub (mixed with a little bit of Wedderspoon Raw Manuka Honey). Again, I like to let this sit on the skin rather than washing it off right after applying it. Honey has made a big difference on the brightness of my skin and controlling breakouts. It's antibacterial and a humectant (draws water into the cells). This makes it beneficial and effective for every skin type.

We've finally reached face mask time!

  • The Leahlani Skincare Mermaid Mask is always a first choice {mine too!}. This green superfood mask is made with spirulina, chlorella, Hawaiian honey, and an abundance of love. It's a staple and it can be used several times per week. {read the CTNB review here}
  •  I also love Tata Harper's Resurfacing Mask. I use this one in the mornings if I have something special going on that day. It's instant glow in a jar (regardless of the current state of your skin).
  • May Lindstrom's The Problem Solver is another favourite. This spicy dry mask will clear out your skin and leave you smooth, balanced, and bright.
  • New to me is the Eminence Organics Sweet Red Rose Treatment made with whole rose petals. I will use anything/everything made with roses, the scent makes me so happy.

I like to finish my evening routine with a really hydrating eye cream like the Antipodes Kiwi Seed Oil Eye Cream and 3-4 drops of my facial oil blend applied directly after toner. No moisturizer for the evening. I keep the Herbivore Botanicals Lip Butter & Herbfarmacy Nail + Cuticle Oil beside my bed and apply them before I go to sleep.

Health

Oral health is really important to me. I practice oil-pulling a few times a week with organic virgin coconut oil and I use dental floss and a tongue scraper every day (along with brushing).

I like to exfoliate my whole body with Frank Body Coconut Coffee Scrub. It softens and hydrates the skin like magic and smells incredible. It makes a huge mess (but totally worth it) so I usually only do a full body scrub once a week. This is a really nice way to self massage and get the lymphatic system going, I think doing his has far more benefits than simply exfoliating the skin.

HMF Forte Probiotic Capsules. I start everyday with a big glass of water and a probiotic. I also take a high quality fish oil {here's CTNB favorite} and a vitamin blend of A,B,C, and E most days.

Silk Road Bea-TEA-ful Skincare Tea. (Laurens full review here!) This is my favourite tea and it's great for internal hydration and a clear radiant complexion. It can be enjoyed in a mug or as a facial steam(!!).

I love a good bath, it really helps me to relax and destress. SeaFlora Soothing Sea Kelp Soak will most likely be found in there with me. This locally harvested (Sooke, BC) seaweed bath soak detoxifies and nourishes even the most sensitive of skins. Great for foot soaks or full body baths! I also enjoy the Herbivore Botanicals Coconut Milk Bath Soak. A complete delight, soothing and super smoothing.

The Extras / Self care

Rose Quartz. I love the positive energy this stone brings. Sometimes I'll even wear a really tiny rose quartz tucked into my bra (close to my heart) on days when I need some extra love.

Sage/Palo Santo. If I'm feeling overwhelmed or scattered I like to burn the sage to clear my mind. Palo Santo is beautiful to burn before a yoga practice or meditation. It's very insightful and uplifting.

Positive Affirmations. I'm in love with the Spirit Junkie App. It sends you a new positive affirmation every day. Sometimes I'll write down one that I really love and stick it to the bathroom mirror so I can be reminded throughout the day.
