Peek Inside Haley's Medicine Cabinet

Peek Inside Haley's Medicine cabinet for great #cleanbeauty tips on acne, anti-aging, and herb; remedies

We’re back again for our monthly install of “Peek Inside A Clean Girl’s Medicine Cabinet”. Up this month is my bestie, Haley Davis, a super rad chick hailing from Long Beach. Haley and I have ventured together in clean beauty and lifestyle for quite some time now. We share our must haves, the don’t tries, and maybe somedays with one another. She was a huge encouragement to me when starting this blog, without it I doubt CTNB would have been born.

I have witnessed the transformation of Haley’s skin and health since she has switched to a clean lifestyle. Her skin is free of acne and somehow, even without makeup, is always radiant and smooth…often reminiscent of Snow White. She has a great medicine cabinet to share with us today full of beauty must-haves and herbal medicine therapies. So, keep reading for one of the best medicine cabinets yet!

  • Stark’s White Willow Bark Perfecting Tonic: Calms inflamed skin, treats blemishes and promotes healthy looking skin. I use after cleansing my face and applying toner, day and night
  • Stark’s Meadowfoam The Everybody Oil: A blend of vanilla, lavender and citrus oils. I use as a total-body moisturizer as well as a facial cleanser with my Konjac sponge (pink sponge pictured to the right). This oil is perfect for unclogging pores, regulating sebum and restoring acne-prone skin. I've notice my skin being much more clear and soft with a healthy glow. (Can also be used as pre-shampoo hair treatment or to add a little luster to dry locks).
  • Stark’s Grapefruit Cleanse + Hydrate Balm: This water-less balm has the unique concept of being both cleanser and hydrator. I use morning and/or night using the "oil cleansing method” with my Konjac sponge. It melts away daily grime and dirt, replenishing my skin with healthy, antioxidant-rich plant-derived oils and butters all while moisturizing the skin. I alternate between the Meadowfoam oil and this Grapefruit balm for my AM and PM cleansing depending on my mood and what my skin is in need of.
  • Konjac Sponge - 100% natural sponge made of a plant fibers called konjac. Handmade in Korea and proven in Japanese studies to be the gentlest and most effective material to cleanse the skin with. Is pH-balanced, providing a serious deep clean. The one pictured is infused with pure French clay (which aids in revitalizing tired/aged skin. It comes 3 or 4 different types. I prefer the black one that is infused with bamboo charcoal which works to heal acne prone and problem skin.
  • Dr. Schulze's Fem+ : I was “blessed” with PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder), a serve case of PMS. I’ve tried many things to limit or subside the symptoms like diet and birth control; I was even prescribed Prozac at a young age (luckily my parents had enough wits’ about them and did not allow me to take it). I stumbled upon this supplement, made completely of organic and wild botanicals and have been taking it ever since. I take 2-4 dropper full in juice once a day, 1-2 weeks before my period begins. It helps reduce irritability, mood swings and bloating. This works so well for me that my husband has joked about hooking me up to a continuous IV infusion of this stuff the weeks before my period.
  • Vapour Instant Skin Perfector : This is a luxury moisturizer and primer with none of the silicone or chemicals and is made with all organic and natural mineral pigments. I use this when I’m applying heavy coverage of makeup for a night out or when taking photos. This primer immediately improves your skin tone and texture along while decreasing the appearance of line lines, wrinkles and pores.
  • Vapour Atmosphere Soft Focus Foundation: this foundation is made completely with organic ingredients and natural mineral pigments. It nourishes, brightens and smooth’s your completion.  This foundation gives me nice coverage and a very natural look. I use it every day. {Check out the CTNB review of it here}
  • Dr. Schulzes Air Detox: If you have been to my house or more specifically the bathroom, you will always find this above the toilet. This is no ordinary air freshener, it doesn’t just mask smells like most other sprays it actually cleanses/detox’s the air of airborne bacteria, viruses, pathogens, antigens and nasty smells on contact. I have a VERY sensitive sense of smell and when you only share one bathroom, well lets just say this spray has been a marriage saver! I even carry a bottle in my nursing bag when I work in the ICU. {Jena here, this stuff is awesome! I am completely addicted to the medicinal smell of it. If you are looking for a great bathroom deodorizer, try this!}

  • Soapwalla Restorative Face Serum: This is a potent miracle-in-a-bottle that rejuvenates and revitalizes skin, visibly reducing fine lines and redness. This serum can be used as an all over facial treatment and is particularly great for very sensitive skin areas. I have been able to prevent deep set “crows feet”  by applying a small amount of this serum under my eyes every PM. I also kept nagging my husband to due the same because the lines around his eyes began becoming much more prominent over the years; he and I were able to see a huge decrease in the appearance of those lines within a few weeks.
  • MyChelle Argan Oil: 100% organic Argan Oil, often called ‘liquid gold’, is an organic product extracted from the kernels of the argan tree, which is native to Morocco. It is extremely rich in beneficial nutrients including fatty acids and vitamin E. It has many benefits and uses.  I use as a light moisturizer every AM and PM after cleansing and applying toner. I also use it on my hair after blow-drying to prevent and treat frizz.
  • Stark Cypress Purity +Defense Oil: Protects your skin from environmental damage, decongests skin, and regulates sebum production. Has an amazing green woodsy smell with a citrus finish. I use every AM after cleansing my face and applying toner.
  • Stark Neroli Midnight Oil: Neroli oil is calming and relieves anxiety while helping skin to stimulate cell-regeneration, which promotes a more youthful appearance. The blend of oils in this treatment also treats hormonal skin issues such as acne, as well as acne scars. I use every PM after cleansing my face and applying toner.

I get really bad tension headaches. When I’m feeling really tense, I will rub this on my neck and shoulders to keep my headaches at bay.  It can also be rubbed on the temples for headaches, or on the head or chest for congestion. Or use it to stop the itching and pain of mosquito bites and bee stings—the list is almost endless.
  • Waxelene Alternative Petroleum Jelly: made with 100% beeswax. Beeswax has been proven to offer mild anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiviral benefits along with softening skin. All while allowing your skin to breath and not clog pores. I use this as a thick moisturizer in the dry winter months on my lips, face and hands. Beauty secret: I always make sure to apply this as my moister base (before the Vapour Skin Perfector) prior to putting on my make-up when I really want flawless look that lasts. This prevents my makeup from caking or flaking.

  • Bragg's Organic Apple Cider Vinegar What don’t I use this for!  ;) I LOVE this stuff!!  I drink it to treat and prevent acid reflux and heartburn, I add to my homemade salad dressings, I mix with my clay face masks instead of using water. I also put it in my hair a few times a month to make my locks look shiny and healthy. This is a sure staple in my household. {Check out the CTNB DIY Acne Fighting Toner with ACV as the star ingredient, over at Scratch Mommy)
  • My own, homemade organic deodorant – I’m a huge advocate in using an organic or natural deodorant (especially if you are a women since your breast tissue and lymph nodes are so close to your under arms) but, I was never able to find one that kept me “stink free” all day or that didn’t give me an irritating rash. That was until I decided to make my own. I don’t mean to brag, but this stuff totally ROCKS! Even after a long hot sweaty day I won’t smell or get a red itchy rash.  No joke, my husband thanks me all the time for making this because he loves it just as much as it do!  When making batches, I alternate between Plant Therapy’s "Deodorizing" and "Germ Fighter" blend of essential oils. These oils aid in fighting odors and they give the deodorant a pleasant unisex smell.
  • Rahua Finishing Treatment and Voluminous HairsprayI use the finishing treatment on my damp hair before I blow-dry and finish with the Voluminous Hairspray if I have curled my hair
  • Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay - This was the very first natural product that, Jena, introduced me to and raved about how well it worked. Ever since, I have been hooked and always have a tub stocked in my bathroom. I try to use this once a week, especially if I feel a breakout coming on. It leaves my skin clean, clear and with a youthful glow.
  • Stark Green Tea Detox Clay Mask: This clay mask helps decongest and exfoliate skin. 1-3 times a week I mix a little of this with Stark’s Grapefruit Balm (pictured on the top shelf) and use it as an exfoliant. I will then leave this on for approx. 10 min, letting it completely dry, then remove it.  It leaves my skin hydrated, soft and brighter.
  • Dr. Shultze's Cold and Flu "Shot"This is a powerful and convenient herbal “shot” made of 20 potent herbs, including Echinacea, garlic, habanero and ginger. It is designed to supercharge your immune system to protect you in the cold and flu season. As well at the first signs of a cold to help decrease the length and severity of your illness. My husband and I have used this many times in the past few months to fight off the awful flu that has been going around and notice a much quicker recovery by doing so

As I mentioned earlier, I get horrible tension headaches d/t stress and tension build up in my neck and shoulders. • Apply generously all over your scalp (work in sections) then massage into scalp for 3 minutes (this increases the circulation to your scalp).  Comb through hair. You may add any extra to your ends if they are damaged. Leave in for 2-5 hours (or overnight if that is easier); then wash completely out (may need to shampoo 2-3 times to completely remove all oils. I use this 2-4 times a month for healthy looking hair.

The Interview

What is your clean beauty story?

I began becoming interested in exercise and healthy eating in high school so I could lose excess weight. I started reading a ton of books on eating right. One book would lead me to another book, which would lead me to another, and so on. I eventually stumbled upon the benefits of eating organic and eating a primarily vegetarian diet. Around that time I also began researching the positive effects of detoxing. After hearing my passion and beliefs for healthily eating a friend from work suggested that I read one of Kimberly Snyder’s books on “The Beauty Detox Diet. The principals in her books resonated within me and where easy to incorporate into my busy schedule. I am not always the best at healthy eating, but when I do follow her “diet,” I look and feel my best. I truly believe the old saying, “You are what you eat.”

This months install of "Peek Inside a Clean Girls Medicine Cabinet" is full of A+ clean beauty brands and holistic health tips

My journey into a natural beauty/clean living routine was very different. After reading about organic and healthy eating I of course ran across many articles, books and blogs about how we should be using natural beauty products on our skin and for everyday household cleaning. The only problem was that the beauty and makeup world has soooo many products all claiming to be free of parabens, chemicals and poisonous additives. I soon realized that many of these claims were often false. This made me confused and very discouraged on what products to buy, that was until I met Jena. I was amazed at the knowledge she possessed in natural living and since she had been “clean living” for a large portion of her life, she was able to steer me in the right direction on what products to buy. Jena would give me the name and brand of products she liked and the ones I should stay clear of. I would send her pictures and lists of product ingredient and she would give me the “thumbs up” or “thumbs down.” Her help has allowed me to have a sound mind when purchasing natural/clean products (I confess, I still ask for her help at times!)  It is because of Jena, that I have a strong foundation of natural living and why I now live a much cleaner and healthier lifestyle, and for that I am truly grateful. {Thanks Girl!😘}

Have you noticed a difference in your skin and body since you have been using clean products?

I most certainly have! A HUGE difference. I suffered from severe acne starting in 9th grade (what a great way to start high school, right?)  From that point on I started using heavy makeup to conceal and “cover” up my acne prone skin. I of course wasn’t using the most pure and clean makeup, cleansers, and/or facial treatments. It wasn’t until I met Jena out of college that I then started using truly natural and clean beauty products and makeup. Once I did, it was only a matter of months before I began seeing my acne significantly decrease and my skin looking clearer, brighter and more youthful.

If you had to pick one product from your medicine cabinet that you couldn't live without what would it be?

If you have ever traveled with me, you know this is a really hard question because I LITERALLY pack a whole small suitcase of only toiletries, facial products, hair products and makeup. I will usually take most if not everything you see pictured in my medicine cabinet. BUT, if I had to choose only one, I would choose Stark’s Meadowfoam Everybody Oil. This is because it is a multi-purpose oil. I can use it as my facial cleanser, my facial/or body moisturizer as well as on my hair to tame unruly hair.

What is a secret home remedy of yours when you are feeling under the weather?

I don’t think they are a secret, but the number one product/brand that I use when I am ill or in pain are any the Dr. Shulze’s items. I was introduced to these products by my Aunt in Nevada who is a strong believer in homeopathic healing and makes her own herbs and tonics. Dr. Schulze’s strives in making natural, potent and effective products for healing almost any disease, illness, ache or pain. I’ve haven’t been let down yet when purchasing/using any of his products.

What is your favorite natural health item right now?

My favorite natural item right now is the Rahua Shampoo and Conditioner. I recently stumbled upon this brand when reading a few blogs on natural hair care. After some research I found that most, if not all of their hair care products are completely natural and/or organic! The voluminous shampoo and conditioner are AMAZING and clean so well (the shampoo suds very nicely). I have liked every product I have used by them so far and I have noticed a dramatic difference in the texture and health of my hair since. My hair is super soft and less frizzy.

Well, my clean beauties that's it for this months Peek. Haley sure has a cabinet to be envious of, huh? Stark and Dr. Schulze are clearly something we all need to have...there wasn't one shelf without them! Some of my personal favs were the Rahua Hair Care and the DIY Hair Treatment. I will be trying both soon. If you would like to connect with Haley check her out below.
